Why Am I In Pain?
There are a lot of causes of dental pain and discomfort, and we are equipped to provide quick relief for almost every single one! You may have to come back for a follow-up appointment or procedure depending on the severity and type of pain you’re having, but this isn’t typical.
Tooth Decay: tooth decay is caused by plaque bacteria secreting acids that eat away at your enamel. This can eventually form cavities, which can be very painful and sensitive to things like temperature change, touch, and even sugar! Left unchecked, tooth decay can break through your enamel and into the dentin or even further into your dental pulp!
Tooth decay is generally treated using fillings, and in extreme cases, with a root canal. We are able to provide same-day relief for your cavities using tooth-colored fillings that will blend right in with your healthy, natural teeth! You don’t need to worry about metal fillings at 7 O’Clock Dental!
Abscessed Tooth: an abscess is an infection present between the root of your tooth and your gums. These can cause severe pain and inflammation and are generally due to advanced tooth decay. You may be experiencing traditional tooth pain along with a fever, chills, and other signs of an infection.
Abscesses can often be treated using antibiotics, but in some cases, it may be necessary to perform a root canal or an extraction. In these extreme cases, extraction is usually performed to prevent infection from spreading to other teeth.
Damaged Fillings or Restorations: as much as you might like to think that your fillings, crowns, and other dental restorations may last a lifetime, that isn’t always the case. When these restorations become damaged, you can experience a high degree of pain, especially if any tooth decay has slipped between the cracks and worked its way in behind a filling!
Tooth Grinding or Clenching: grinding your teeth and clenching your jaw can result in serious damage over time. Enamel loss can lead to increased risk of infection, you may wear your teeth down, have microfractures, or even cause damage to your jaw!
Grinding and clenching can also lead to temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD. This painful condition affects the joint that connects your lower jaw to your upper and can cause headaches, muscle pain, and even discomfort in your shoulders and neck! We can prevent the development of TMD by treating your grinding and clenching before it gets worse!
